Vintage Wood Box Sash Windows

In the UK, sash windows are very popular in both new and old buildings. Victorian and Georgian houses were originally equipped with sash windows. Traditional sash windows were constructed of hardwood or softwood; however, they are now readily available in UPVC. Sliding sash windows have been around since the early nineteenth century, and came in single glazed, but now they come in double-glazed box sash versions. A sash window is a kind of window with sliding panels, usually with a weight and pulley system for opening the sliding window panes.
Wooden sash windows have a hollow area within the window frame that holds the sash weights. The sash weights are secured to a sash cord that is also connected to the sliding window pane. Commonly the sash weights in the weight and pulley system are made from lead, although more recently some sash weights are made from steel. The sash cord is manufactured in braided cotton that has been pre-stretched and has a gleaming finish to prevent fraying. Other materials and man-made fibres, such as polypropylene and nylon, are used in the construction of sash cords to enhance abrasion resistance.

Various hardwoods and softwoods may be used to construct Box sash windows. Mahogany, White Oak, Pine, and European Redwood are examples of woods utilized to make box sash windows. Sash windows should be pressure treated with preservatives and wax resins to guarantee maximum protection. It is also advisable to make sure wooden box sash windows have been treated with an insecticide and fungicide. This will keep wood boring insects and fungus from causing harm to the box sash windows. Even after pressure-treated softwood box sash windows are manufactured, the window sills will still be constructed of hardwood.

Six panes of glass in each section of the sliding sash window would be typical for a Georgian sash window. This equals a window with four panes of glass on down section and three panes of glass on the other. This configuration of the window panes is not compulsory for sash windows and sashes are available in many different styles and designs to suit the particular property. During the Victorian era many properties had bay windows fitted with sliding box sashes. Victorian windows included Oriel and Queen Anne windows.

Windows come in a variety of colors, stains, and finishes. Stained or varnished hardwood and softwood timber framed sash windows may highlight the wood's natural texture and hue. Before applying the top coat, be sure to prime or undercoat all Window Box sash windows that require a painted finish.

Replacement wooden framed box sash windows with double glazing are now available for improved energy efficiency. The residents may still profit from double glazing even though the window is constructed using conventional wood and adheres to the original structure's appearance. For the period home, a double glazed box sash window might provide soundproofing and thermal insulation.
